**JOB SUMMARY**
The Hotel Manager (HM) in a key member of the Vessel Leadership Team (VLT - a group of leaders assigned to lead all aspects of each vessel). This employee is responsible for the overall operations of the Hotel Department. This includes overseeing the dining room, galley, beverage program, and housekeeping, as well as all guest service needs as they relate to the Hotel Department. The majority of the HMs work is accomplished during the sailing season with flexible opportunities for additional employment throughout the remainder of the year. Vessel experience is highly desired, but not required. Strong business acumen, communication, computer, attention to detail, and leadership/interpersonal skills are essential. This position offers year-round benefits and pay. This position reports to the Captain.
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES: YEAR-ROUND (SAILING AND NOT SAILING)**
* Collaborate with all VLT members to help manage the ships finances, including coordination with the Seattle Office on key financial metrics.
* Identify creative new cost-savings and revenue-generating ideas and present them to shoreside management.
* As needed, conduct recruiting and placement activities including but not limited to screening applicants, coordinating and participating in interviews, developing and communicating offers of employment and preparation of offer documents.
* Monitor budgetary expenditures to ensure the Hotel Department remains within its limits.
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES: ONBOARD DURING THE SAILING SEASON**
* Direct and indirect supervision, training and development of entire hotel staff.
* Monitor, coach, and counsel work performance throughout the season, and make appropriate staffing decisions based on individual performance. Conduct periodic written performance evaluations as outlined.
* Oversee and work with the Lead Steward in training, developing and supervising a team of 4-8 stewards in the daily operations of the Hotel Department.
* Actively participate in the daily operations of the dining room and throughout the hotel as needed.
* Ensure that the steward staff adheres to housekeeping standards by performing guest cabin and public area inspections. Assign phase work as needed to maintain the overall cleanliness and appearance of the vessel interior. Thoroughly train hotel staff in proper cleaning guidelines as well as personal safety rules.
* Work closely with the Bartender to create a beverage training program that develops a knowledgeable and confident steward staff, capable of meeting and exceeding the vessels beverage program goals.
* Collaborate with the Chef to ensure quality and safety in on board food service plus sanitation standards as they relate to FDA/CDC requirements.
* Oversight of galley operations and quality control in conjunction with the Chef.
* Communicate daily with the Captain, Expedition Leader, and other department heads regarding guest needs, vessel operations, and logistics.
* Reconcile guest shipboard accounts at the end of each trip.
* Oversee inventory & ordering of all galley, bar and hotel supplies.
* Process and track: payroll, petty cash, purchase requisitions, inventory controls, and other reports as assigned by the main office.
* Provide outstanding guest service. Model the values and expectations set for crewmembers.
* Maintain professional demeanor with guests, crew, staff, agents, officials, and the public.
* Respond in a timely manner to all concerns, complaints, and allegations, and conduct investigations as necessary.
* Participate in onboard safety training, meetings and drills as directed by the Captain. Typical drills will include fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding and medical emergencies.
* Comply, enforce, and train hotel staff in all CDC/FDA vessel sanitation requirements.
* Maintain familiarity with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response Activities.
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES: ON LAND WHILE NOT SAILING**
* Completes other tasks as agreed upon annually.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
* Minimum three years of experience managing a team of at least five individuals in a hospitality setting. We are looking for proven leaders who can act as a mentor and motivate their team.
* Minimum of two years of experience in a full-service restaurant is required.
* Understanding of bar operations and knowledge of spirits, cocktails, and wine is highly preferred.
* Be equipped with strong time management skills; able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet tight deadlines. This is essential.
* Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and articulate information to both guests and crew in a respectful, professional manner.
* Hold the skills and composure required to address and resolve guest or crew complaints as they arise.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Google Docs and the ability and willingness to learn additional software programs as needed.
* Comfortable living in close quarters with other crewmembers, including those you are supervising.
