Job Description

We are hiring Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) for our Bergen County residential programs. The ideal candidate possesses a wide range of skills and is eager to promote YAI's mission of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, love, work, and learn in their communities. National Institute for People with Disabilities (NIPD-NJ) is a member of the YAI Network. Key/Essential Functions & Responsibilities include assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, providing emotional support, building positive relationships, supporting people to meet personal goals, engaging in respectful communications, facilitating social activities, supervising and protecting individuals, maintaining program guidelines, ensuring health, wellness and safety, managing crisis situations, providing support in various settings according to individualized plans, maintaining a clean and safe environment, assisting with personal care and activities of daily living, teaching habilitative and rehabilitative skills, supporting advocacy, assisting in communication and dispute resolution, facilitating ethical decision making, meal preparation, transportation, safeguarding funds, medication administration and inventory, scheduling medical appointments, managing petty cash, operating agency vehicles, developing specialized clinical knowledge, implementing behavior support plans, collecting and reporting data, communicating with support circles, teamwork, completing trainings and certifications, documentation and compliance, using teaching skills, understanding behavior as communication, reporting maintenance and safety concerns, consulting with leadership, utilizing approved training techniques for behavior interventions, providing support across settings, participating in treatment plan development, complying with regulatory requirements including HIPAA, and performing other duties as assigned. Minimum qualifications include being at least 18 years old, having a high school diploma or equivalent, holding or obtaining a valid driver's license, meeting physical demands, effective communication skills, enthusiasm for working with people with I/DD, ability to assist with various supports and ADLs, basic computer skills, required certifications and trainings within 120 days of appointment, ability to develop professional relationships, ability to remain calm in stressful situations, and willingness to work beyond scheduled hours as needed. Preferred qualifications include work or life experience supporting people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and knowledge of I/DD and related clinical syndromes. Schedule includes full-time, part-time, weekday and/or weekend positions with various shifts.
