The Bureau of Child Care aims to hire a Child Care Inspector (Public Health Sanitarian) to conduct inspections of child care programs throughout New York City and enforce pertinent laws, rules and regulations. The position involves traveling citywide to inspect facilities and ensure compliance with the NYC Health Code and NYS regulations, and may require travel to Albany for training and to attend state/regulator meetings. Roles include field inspections, reporting, and advising operators on regulatory compliance. Responsibilities Conduct periodic inspections of childcare programs, including premises inspection, document review, field testing and sample collection. Prepare reports on inspection findings using a handheld tablet in a complete, clear, accurate and timely manner. Review findings with operators and instruct on regulatory compliance and remedial measures (e.g., food handling, sanitation, vermin control). Issue court summonses and hearing notices and may close establishments in cases of imminent danger. Determine site viability related to permit applications to open a child care program under NYC Health Code and NYS regulations. Conduct data collection and reporting for routine operations and special studies/surveys. Attend and testify at administrative hearings as a representative of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Travel throughout NYC using mass transit or a personal car and carry approximately 15 pounds of inspection equipment. Selected candidates will travel to Albany, NY for training and to other locations for an annual NYS Regulator’s meeting; expenses paid by the agency. Preferred Skills Strong communication, analytic and observational skills. Ability to deduce potential impacts of conditions or assess risk. Writing skills to adequately describe observations in detail. Computer skills including use of mobile devices.
