Description Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Adjunct Instructor in the ESL Department. The Adjunct Instructor is responsible for course preparation, delivery, and attendance tracking. The Instructor will work closely with the Program Director, ESL on matters related to and for the benefit of the English as a Second Language Department and its students.
Examples of Duties The Durham Technical Community College English as a Second Language Instructor will:
- Initially and continuously assess student goals.
- Assess student progress both formally and informally throughout the reporting period.
- Prepare and deliver classroom presentations at the appropriate level for the students within a given class.
- Meet every scheduled class for the entire scheduled time, except for approved absences with advance notice.
- Vary methods of classroom instruction and involve adult students in classroom activities.
- Use materials and resources appropriate for adults.
- Incorporate the life experience that learners bring to the classroom.
- Create and maintain a positive and non-intimidating learning atmosphere.
- Respect the culture and ethnicity of the students.
- Report student attendance information throughout the instructional period.
- Communicate regularly with the ESL Program Director in person or by phone/email.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree, ESL training, and ESL teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications: - Master's Degree in TESL or closely related field.
- One or more years of experience teaching ESL in an adult education program.
Supplemental Information Candidates should possess the following:
- Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System
- Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, e-mail, Internet, student information databases, library research databases) and experience with Internet-based instruction
- Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching
- Ability to be organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks
- Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups
- Ability to make presentations to small or large audiences
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community
- Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
- Familiarity with OSHA standards as they apply to educational environments
