BETHEL UNIVERSITY JOB DESCRIPTION: ACCOMMODATION SPECIALIST

Contract: 32 hours/week during the academic year (10 months, August-May)

Reports to: Director of Center for Academic Success

CORE DUTIES: The Accommodation Specialist will assist the Director with oversight of programs and services ensuring that students with disabilities have access to all programs and services provided by the university in compliance with federal, state, and local laws. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Conduct student intakes to determine appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities
  • Evaluate medical and psychological reports
  • Assign temporary accommodations as appropriate, particularly for students with concussions
  • Provide problem-solving, advocacy, and mediation for students with disabilities
  • Engage in opportunities to increase own knowledge about case law precedent and best practices
  • Provide direction and support for students who are experiencing academic difficulties
  • Supervise the process for housing accommodation requests (emotional support animals, meal plan accommodations, and private rooms for disability reasons)
  • Conduct sessions to educate faculty on specific disabilities as requested
  • Represent the department at admission events--preview days, accepted student day, launch days, etc
  • Consistently treat others without bias and apply a Christ-like empathy to practice and policy
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing multicultural understanding on campus
  • Collaborate with other campus resources, such as Wellness Center
  • Attend annual one-day conference for professionals serving in Disability Resource Offices in higher education in the state of Indiana
  • Review and update department web presence and publications annually
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

(Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in education, special education, psychology (or related field, if candidate has experience working with individuals with disabilities)
  • Minimum of two years of experience providing services or support for people with disabilities
  • Willingness to become familiar with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 - Amended 2010, the Fair Housing Act, and other applicable laws
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Capacity to relate to and work with a diverse population
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail

(Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master's degree in disability studies, education, special education, rehabilitation counseling, school counseling, school psychology, psychology, or other field related to support of people with disabilities
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting (either early childhood special education, K-12 special education, or higher education)
  • Familiarity with assessment tools and test scores generally used in making diagnoses
  • Knowledge of assistive technology apps and their practical assistance for people with disabilities
